Gravatar stands for “Globally Recognized Avatar” where an avatar can be a picture of yourself or a cartoon/logo/image which represents you or your business as shown on the left. By now, you would have noticed pictures or cartoons alongside blog comments. These are the avatars of blog visitors who maker their comments on gravatar enabled blogs

How does it work?
For avatars to appear beside a visitor’s comments, the Wordpress blog must have a Gravatar plugin installed or are gravatar enabled.

If you want to place your own avatar alongside your comments in blogs that are gravatar enabled, you need to sign up for a free account at Gravatar.com.

During the sign up process, you would be required to provide an email address and upload a picture (avatar) to the site. The size of the avatar image would normally be 80px by 80px. The picture will be stored on the Gravatar.com server and associated with your email address.

Thereafter, when you make comments on any gravatar enable blogs by providing your email address which matches the one stored on gravatar.com server, your avatar will appear beside your comments.

If you love to see your picture to appear on blogs around the world wide web, all you need to do is to sign up for a gravatar.com account and make comments on any gravatar enabled blogs.

When you have enabled your sidebar widget to include pages, the page titles of any pages that you have created will be automatically listed as a link on the sidebar.

There are times, however, that you may not want your pages to be listed as such. In this case, it is very simple to exclude such pages by following the procedures:

1. Logon to your Wordpress admin screen

2. Get the IDs of the pages to be excluded. Click here to see how it is done.

3. On your WP Dashboard, click the Appearance/Widgets

4. Locate and show the relevant widget where the page(s) to be excluded is listed. The following screen should appear:

5. In the “Exclude” rectangular box, insert the IDs of the pages to be excluded.

6. Click “Done” and the “Save Changes” button

This process should enable you to exclude pages from the navigation sidebar.

Knowing how to hide wordpress pages from the header horizontal navigation menu is useful especially when you:

1. have a number of pages and do not want to clutter the navigation menu with your page titles.

2. want to create a special page for the purpose of linking from your posts or other pages.

Below is a way to hide unwanted page links from your navigation menu:

1. Go to your Wordpress Editor (Appearance section) and open the header.php file and look for the following codes:
<?php $children = wp_list_pages(’sort_column=menu_order&depth=1&title_li=’);?>

2. Add the following codes (in green) and page IDs (in blue) that you want to exclude from the navigation menu as follows:
<?php $children = wp_list_pages(’sort_column=menu_order&depth=1&title_li=&exclude=1,2,3‘);?>

Header.php codes in different themes may look different as shown in the example below. In this example, add the codes (in green) and page IDs (in blue) in the manner shown below to exclude the page links:

<div id=”navigation”>
<ul class=”nav”>
<li id=”<?php if (is_home()) { ?>home<?php } else { ?>page_item<?php } ?>”><a href=”<?php bloginfo(’url’); ?>” title=”Home”>Home</a></li><?php wp_list_pages(’title_li=&depth=1&title_li=&exclude=1,2,3‘); ?>
</ul>
</div>

Note: The page IDs 1, 2,3 is for illustration only. Click here to learn how to get the actual post or page IDs.

With this knowledge, you will have a much wider selection of Wordpress themes that you can use as most of them have horizontal page menus.

There are times that you may want to set up more than one blog with one hosting account in order not to incur extra cost of signing up for a new hosting account to host your other blogs.

To set up unlimited blogs in Hostgator, use the following steps:

STEP 1: Register your domain name with a domain registrar and set up your Domain Name Server (DNS). Click here to see how it is done.

STEP 2: Add the new domain to your hosting account. To do this, go to your hosting account Cpanel by typing “www.yourolddomainname.com/ cpanel” into your browser’s url address box. In the Cpanel, click the Addons Domains icon as shown below:

STEP 3: Install Wordpress by clicking the Fantastico Deluxe icon as shown below. Follow these steps to install your new Wordpress blog.

Step 4: Set up your Wordpress theme(s) and plugins for your new blog. Upon installation of your new Wordpress blog, your hosting provider will create a new folder in your hosting account (based on the admin user name that you specified during the Wordpress installation process). This folder will house your wp-admin, wp-content folders (containing your theme, plugin and upload sub-folders etc.) of your new Wordpress blog. Therefore, you would need to FTP your favourite theme(s) and plugins to these sub-folders.

Fire up your FTP program (FileZilla) and type in the host name, username and password belonging to your main site name (ie. the first domain that use the hosting account and not the new Wordpress blog domain name) and click the “Quickconnect” button to access your hosting files. Drag your preferred Wordpress theme(s) and plugins to the above mentioned theme and plugin folders respectively.

Step 5: Activate the theme and plugins that you have FTP to your new blog. To do this, type e.g. http://www.newblogname.com/wp-admin into your browser’s url address box and sign in to your wp-admin screen using the username and password that you specified during the installation of your new Wordpress blog (as per step 3 above). While in the wp-admin screen, activate your preferred Wordpress theme and plugins.

You should now be able to start blogging with your new theme.

In my case, there was no response when I click the Upload/Insert tab while trying to make a posting. I have tried various ways to fix the problem which includes contacting my hosting company on the matter and but could not seem to nail down the problem.

Out of desperation, I decided to upgrade to the WP 2.7 version and it worked! If you have faced this similar problem where you are unable to upload images to your Wordpress blog, you may try to upgrade your Wordpress version by clicking this link.

When you set up a feed subscription on your blog using FeedBurner, they will generate for you a set of HTML codes, which you will copy and paste them onto your text widget. Your blog should then display the following text link which will enable your visitors to subscribe to your feed by clicking on the link.

The above text link is represented by the following FeedBurner HTML codes:

<a href=”http://www.feedburner.com/fb/a/emailverifySubmit? feedId= 2482285& loc=en_US”>Subscribe to my RSS feed by Email</a>

You would have noticed that the above text link does not look professional. You may want to decorate the text link by adding an image before the link as show below.

Below are the steps to add an image to your text link:

Step 1: Download a small image of your choice onto your desktop or save into a folder.

Step 2: Create a new post and upload your mage by clicking on the Add media icon. A set of HTML codes will be generated by Wordpress when you have successfully inserted the image onto your post. The HTML codes would look something like this:

<img class=”alignnone size-medium wp-image-189″ title=”email2″ src=”http://xwordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/09/email2.jpeg” alt=”" width=”40″ height=”44″ />

Step 3: Copy your above image codes (in your post) onto your FeedBurner codes (on your text widget) as follows

<a href=”http://www.feedburner.com/fb/a/emailverifySubmit? feedId=2482285& loc=en_US”><img class=”alignnone size-medium wp-image-189″ title=”email2″ src=”http://xwordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/09/ email2.jpeg” alt=”" width=”40″ height=”44″ />Subscribe to my RSS feed by Email</a>

Save the changes. When you refresh your browser, your image would appear on the left side of the text link.

When you look at your Wordpress dashboard, you must be wondering what is the difference between a post and a page.

Post:

Posts are date-driven content where it is always added to the top part of the blog. When another post is published, the earlier post will move down below the new post. Secondly, post, unlike pages are shown in the Archives, Category links and Recent Posts. Thirdly, posts (not pages) are included in syndication feeds whereby a subscriber to your post can read your latest posts.

Pages:

Pages are are not time-driven and they do not appear in blog categories, archives or recent entries. They are on its own, just like a normal web page on a website. However, a page can be linked to a post and vice versa. A good example would be the “About” page. Pages are normally accessed via menu links or sidebar links.

To add a side border to an image, you just need to add some CSS codes into your image html codes.

1. Add Thick border:

Below is an image with no side border around it and with the following html codes:<img src=”http://yoursite.com/flowers.jpg” alt=”" width=”50″ height=”50″ />

To add a thick grey border around the image, insert the following CSS code as highlighted in bold below:

<img style=”border: 3px solid #ecf1ef” src=”http://yoursite.com/flowers.jpg” alt=”" width=”50″ height=”50″ />

The end result:

You can adjust the border thickness by changing the border pixels or the border color by changing the color code.

2. Add Single border:

To add a single border around an image, insert the following CSS code as highlighted in bold below:

<img style=”border: 1px solid silver; padding:4px” src=”http://yoursite.com/flowers.jpg” alt=”" width=”50″ height=”50″ />

The end result:

3. Add Double border:

To add a double border around an image, add the following codes in bold:

<img style=”border: 2px double silver” src=”http://yoursite.com/x.gif” alt=”" width=”50″ height=”50″ />

The end result:

If you want every image on your side bar to have a border, you may insert the border CSS code into your stylesheet using a class tag

Adding a small border around an image would make your image more professional looking. Similarly, adding a white or light grey border around an image would look better if your image is against a color background.

There is a simple fix for “HTTP error” message when you insert image into your post while working with wp2.5 version.

It involves inserting the following script into your .htaccess file.

<IfModule mod_security.c>

<Files async-upload.php>

SecFilterEngine Off

SecFilterScanPOST Off

</Files>

</IfModule>

Do not be frighten by this “.htaccess file” as it is really very easy to insert the script fix. Below are the steps:

Step 1. Before you begin to add the additional script into the .htaccess file, download (use a FTP program) a copy of the existing .htaccess file from your server into your computer as a backup. (In case something goes wrong after you have added the additional script, you can always upload (using FTP) this original .htaccess file back to your server, replacing the non-working .htaccess file).

Step 2. Make a copy of the .htaccess file and place it into another folder as your computer would not allow you to have two identical file name in the same folder.

Step 3: Insert the above script. For the full instruction, go to this site.

Step 4: Upload the .htaccess file (with additional script) into your server, placing the existing .htaccess file.

Once done, the above fix should enable you to insert images into your post.

Do not be surprised that you will not be able to add images into your post (http error displayed) a few weeks down the road as your Wordpress may overwrite your .htaccess file, resulting in your additional script fix being deleted. (To prevent your .htaccess file from being overwritten, you may wish to read this article.

If the above happens, use your FTP program to download a copy of the .htaccess file and check whether the script fix is still there. If otherwise, use the above prescribed steps to insert the additional script again (or retrieve a backup copy of the .htaccess file with the script fix) and upload the .htaccess file to your server.

I hope this article is helpful in solving your problem of inserting images into your post.
